History
Established: 1928 Joined Parkland Regional Library System: 2000
The Stettler Public Library was initially opened in the Stettler Town Hall by the IODE in 1928. It was staffed by volunteers who operated the library for 12 hours per week. Memberships were $1 for adults and 50¢ for children. By 1951, the library had a collection of 4700 books and had 267 members. In 1955, the IODE turned the library with its 7000 items over to the Town of Stettler.
The Stettler Municipal Library was formed in 1956, and the first library board was appointed. The first paid library manager was hired in 1957, and was paid $1/hr. That same year, the library moved to a space above the “Club Cafe,” where rent was $80/month. In 1966, the library moved to the Town Office building. In 1972, the Dewey Decimal system was adopted.
The library moved once more in 1984 and hired a new library manager, who introduced Saturday Morning Story Time and started the first summer reading program. The following year, the town and county signed a Joint Library Operational Agreement, and a new Stettler Public Library Board was formed with members from both town and county library boards.
In 1992, a Friends of the Library group was organized, and in 1994, the library moved to its current location in the Stettler Recreation Centre. In 1997, the library was automated, and in 2006, “Phase 1” of renovations eliminated public washrooms in favour of more public space.
